New Trends in Teen Substance Use: What everyone must know

Attention  Educators, parents, and community members!.

The face of substance abuse and the types of substances being used are constantly changing. The best way to help your child avoid the dangers of alcohol and drugs is to be an educated parent. Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School, in conjunction with local community agencies, will be holding a forum on current drug trends affecting local communities throughout Bergen County. An emphasis will be placed on the increased abuse of prescription drugs and heroin by juveniles and the far reaching effects it has on our community.

Presenters will include school personnel, local law enforcement, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, and substance abuse prevention specialists.

  • Tuesday APRIL 22, 2014 7:00 P.M.

Drug Abuse in Our Backyard-The Face of Addiction: A Family Portrait

Wednesday, April 23, 2014, Drug Abuse in Our Backyard-The Face of Addiction: A Family Portrait, 7:00 PM, Pascack Valley High School, 200 Piermont Avenue, Hillsdale, NJ 07642. The Hills Valley Coalition (HVC) returns to its mission’s roots with a moving and provocative program featuring journalist David Sheff, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction, a recounting of Sheff’s harrowing discovery and struggle to help his son Nic overcome his methamphetamine addiction, and Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America’s Greatest Tragedy. David will weave together the perceptions and experiences of Nic’s addiction and their family’s path through discovery, treatment, relapse and recovery. Nic Sheff said “When I first read my father’s memoir Beautiful Boy, I understood just how much my addiction was killing him. I promised myself I would never cause anyone that kind of pain again. But of course, life is never so simple.”

Addiction is the worst problem in America – the cause of more deaths than any other non-natural cause, and most addicts start to use during adolescence.  Dr. Dan Siegel, points out in his book Brainstorm, most adolescents are curious and attracted to risk, and impulse control isn’t fully developed. Biology, stress, and other pre-existing mental illnesses play key roles in developing addiction. In Clean, David Sheff offers a science-based paradigm for preventing drug abuse and treating addiction that is based on the principle that addiction is a disease, not a moral failing.  This is a myth-shattering look at drug abuse and addiction treatment, based on cutting edge research. While not curable, addiction is both preventable and treatable, but current systems fail addicts over and over again. He reveals how addiction really works and how we as a community can combat it.  Prior to the event we will have a Resource Fair of Mental Health providers in the field of addiction who will be available to answer questions and provide information regarding treatment and mental health resources. Doors open at 6pm.
